Job Description
About the Role
With over 84,000 plants representing about 27,000 taxa, The Huntington is home to one of largest and most diverse collections of living plants in the world. Our biodiverse living collections provide an opportunity to interpret the wide variety of plant life for educational, conservation, research, and display purposes.
The Huntington is seeking a conservation intern for the cryobiotechnology program, which is one of two research focal areas for the Botanical Division. This internship is meant to give an understanding of the tissue culture process and basics of cryopreservation and how they are used in a Plant Conservation program, with an emphasis on rare and uncommonly cultivated plant material.
This position will primarily focus on securely storing tissue from select genotypes in the genus Quercus. This is a full-time 12 week internship at 40 hours per week.
Essential Duties
  • In a laboratory setting, the intern will multiply oak shoots using a tissue culture system.
  • While working with staff, the intern will work towards towards optimizing protocols for various stages of the tissue culture process.
  • Assist with cryopreservation experiments using in vitro shoot tips.
  • Assist Conservation staff in day-to-day operations in the tissue culture lab or seed bank.

Other Related Work:
  • May assist with data entry and working with seed vouchers in the herbarium.


Qualifications:

  • Background in Biology, with a basic understanding of Plant Biology.
  • Tissue culture experience preferred, with an understanding of sterile technique
  • Laboratory experience in the life sciences.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Currently enrolled in a college or university as a Junior or Senior with relevant course background preferred

Working Conditions:
  • Will primarily work indoors in the cryobiotechnology labs (Prep & Tissue Culture Lab, Crotty Conservation Lab, and Edison Light Lab), but may work outside in garden or nursery setting.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods, stoop, bend, lift up to 25 lbs.
